Winners and losers of the Nevada Democratic presidential debate

Published

  • Six Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday night for the ninth debate of the 2020 Democratic primary.
  • The debate was combative and punctuated by withering attacks from all sides on the newcomer on stage: billionaire former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.
  • Sen. Elizabeth Warren took the first, and most devastating swings, at Bloomberg and generally dominated throughout the night, including with positive pitches for her policies.
  • While Bloomberg was inundated with attacks and struggled to deliver a coherent defense of his record, Sen. Amy Klobuchar was forced to defend her prosecutorial record in Minnesota and her apparent ignorance about Mexican politics.

Six Democratic presidential candidates took the stage in Las Vegas, Nevada, on Wednesday night for the ninth — and most combative — debate of the 2020 Democratic primary.

The winners: Sens. Elizabeth Warren and Bernie Sanders

Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Massachusetts progressive, came out swinging in the first minutes of the debate, targeting her fire at the newcomer in the race: billionaire former Mayor Michael Bloomberg.

“I’d like to talk about who we’re running against — a billionaire who calls women fat broads and horse-faced lesbians,” Warren said, drawing audible gasps from the audience. “And no, I’m not talking about Donald Trump. I’m talking about Michael Bloomberg.”

Warren continued to pummel Bloomberg throughout the two-hour debate on everything from his history of misogynistic comments to the discriminatory “stop and frisk” policy he implemented in New York City.

But Warren wasn’t just on the attack. She also delivered substantive pitches for her own policies, including her wealth tax, her investment plan for minority-owned businesses, and her climate plan. And she came to the defense of Sen. Amy Klobuchar after former Mayor Pete Buttigieg attacked her for forgetting the name of the Mexican president in a recent interview.

Warren’s performance drew extensive praise from commentators online and her campaign announced it had its best hour of fundraising to date in the middle of the debate.

But Warren didn’t spend much time attacking the frontrunner in the race: Sen. Bernie Sanders.

In fact, former Mayor Pete Buttigieg was the only candidate who took multiple, aggressive swings at Sanders.

Overall, Sanders made it out of Wednesday night relatively unscathed — a win for him given his top showings in Iowa and New Hampshire and his surge in recent national polling.

The losers: Michael Bloomberg and Amy Klobuchar

Bloomberg struggled throughout the debate to make a positive case for his candidacy, instead spending most of his time defending his comments about women, apologizing for stop and frisk, and disputing various claims made about his record.

Every candidate on stage took multiple opportunities to attack Bloomberg. Former Vice President Joe Biden noted that Bloomberg at one point called the Affordable Care Act “a disgrace,” rejected the Obama administration’s efforts to reign in his policing tactics in New York, and was elected mayor as a Republican.

Sanders tore into Bloomberg for donating to the campaigns of Republican members of Congress, Buttigieg called Bloomberg and Sanders the two “most polarizing figures on this stage,” and Klobuchar accused Bloomberg of “hiding behind his campaign ads.”

Klobuchar also spent a large chunk of the debate on defense. At one point, she was asked to explain why she wasn’t able to name the president of Mexico in a recent interview on Telemundo. The senator described the lapse as a mistake, and Buttigieg jumped in to call it an example of inexcusable ignorance.

The Senator from Minnesota retorted at one point, “I wish everyone was as perfect as you, Pete.”

Klobuchar was also forced to defend her record as the top prosecutor in Hennepin County, Minnesota, during which time she oversaw the prosecution of a 16-year-old black boy, who was convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison. But new evidence and clear inconsistencies in the case indicate Myon Burrell, now 33, may be innocent.

Shaq joins coronavirus-driven koi pond trend

Published

A team of experts recently installed a huge koi pond at the Atlanta home of Basketball Hall of Famer Shaquille O’Neal.

The Shaq-sized water feature includes an 80-foot stream, six waterfalls, 180 tons of stone and a 22-by-50-foot pond with a sandy beach entry and a fire pit on one side, according to Greg Wittstock, the owner and CEO of Aquascape who’s also known as “The Pond Guy.”

“It’s a Ferrari of ponds,” he said.

The pond was built between the 8,600-square-foot home and a large treehouse that was installed for an episode of Animal Planet’s “Treehouse Masters” about two years ago. Wittstock showed off the finished product in a YouTube video.

“It’s awesome, brother,” Shaq says in Wittstock’s video. “You did a wonderful job.”

Shaq isn’t the only homeowner with a new koi pond. Wittstock said Aquascape, his Illinois-based business, has had a tremendous surge in business as the coronavirus pandemic has kept people at home.

“We cannot keep up,” he said. “We’re working 12-hour shifts six days a week, and I’ve got everybody and their kids working for me.”

Others in the koi business said they’ve also had an uptick interest. Mike Rice, the president of Mt. Parnell Fisheries in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania, told FOX Business the coronavirus had reversed a downward trend.

“I feel that the hobby … was beginning to decline domestically prior to the COVID pandemic, but with more people getting into DIY projects there has definitely been an uptick this past spring/summer,” Rice wrote in an email.

Even Google search data show that there were more searches for “koi” in May and June than any other time in the past five years.

TINY HOME, BACKYARD COTTAGE DEMAND SURGES AMID CORONAVIRUS PANDEMIC

Wittstock said he believed people have been looking to create “an escape” at home to help counter the stresses the pandemic has caused.

“I think they just want the peace and tranquility and serenity that a water feature provides,” he said.

It’s a drastic turn compared to the last major economic downturn. The 2008 financial crisis saw a dramatic drop in business. This time, “We had one week in March whenever everybody was in limbo and then it was an explosion,” Wittstock said.

Most of Aquascape’s business is not large projects like the water feature for Shaq, although Wittstock, who was also the star of the Nat Geo Wild reality series “Pond Stars,” said they do about one large-scale project each year, often for a celebrity client.

Aquascape sells all the pumps, filters, fish and plant care items and other goods one would need for a backyard water feature. A more typical setup for a new client would be an 11-by-16 ecosystem pond, an 8-10-foot stream and a 2-foot waterfall, all with filtration, pumps, plumbing, liner and stonework. A project of that scope would often run somewhere between $10,000 and $12,000, Wittstock said.

The interest since April has been “unbelievable,” he said.

“I can’t even begin to tell you,” he said. “It is insane.”

Mask sale Uptown to raise funds for businesses | COVID-19

Published

on

By

When a former Uptown business owner saw people’s reactions to Greenwood passing a city ordinance requiring customers and employees at local businesses to wear protective masks, she wanted to do what she could to support business owners.

Nicole Munnerlyn, who owned Sweet Teas Children’s Boutique in Uptown for eight years, said she was surprised by negative comments she saw from people responding to the new ordinance.

“People were saying ‘I just won’t shop Uptown, then,’” she said. “Well, it’s not the city business owners that should be punished or hurt by a city mask ordinance that’s really there to protect people in the first place.”

The family business, Munnerlyn and Co., makes personal protective equipment, including masks and face shields. Munnerlyn said she’s planning to set up a tent from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tuesday in front of Sweet Teas to sell protective equipment, but also to inform the public about masks. For every box sold, 10% of her sales will go to Uptown as a donation to help buy masks for Uptown businesses to use or give to customers.

“After everything that transpired, I just wanted to see what I could do to support our local businesses,” she said. “In addition to being out there, I’d like to educate people too about what needs to be used and what times and places different masks are beneficial.”

She wants to share what research she’s done into masks in order to ensure the ones Munnerlyn and Co. produce are up to FDA standards. The company sells the three-ply masks that are similar to surgical masks, along with KN95 masks that meet the FDA’s 95% filtration requirement.

She wants to show off different ways to test masks, such as by wearing it tautly and then trying to blow air through the fabric. She said if you can blow air through the fabric of the mask, it’s likely not offering much protection.

Before setting up her booth Tuesday, Munnerlyn said she’ll spend much of Monday meeting with Uptown business owners to find out other ways she can help.

Uptown Manager Lara Hudson said the funds raised Tuesday will go to helping businesses buy the protective equipment they need. She said Munnerlyn’s offer was greatly appreciated.

“So many of those businesses are already struggling with the loss of revenues, and they’re going to need to purchase masks,” she said. “Our main goal has been just to help them in any way we can.”

Hudson said even if Greenwood’s business owners might have differing opinions regarding COVID-19 protections, Uptown’s businesses always help one another out.

Business owner targeted with death threats after buying Black Lives Matter billboard in Houston

Published

HOUSTON – A Houston business owner is facing backlash after purchasing a Black Lives Matter billboard in Houston.

Le Hoang Hguyen, a Vietnamese-American, said he stands in solitary of Black people and those who face racism in America. The billboard is located at Bellaire Blvd. and Boone road in southwest Houston.

“Having faced racism first hand over the tears and especially having seen the recent social injustices in American, I used my personal funds to put a billboard that shares the message of the Black Lives Matter,” Hoang Hguyen wrote on Facebook on Wednesday. “I did not receive any outside funds. The opinion expressed is 100% my own.”

In addition to public support for the movement, Hoang Hguyen said he hoped the billboard would inspire the next generation and spark hard conversations about racism and injustice. He said the billboard is not a political message, nor does it support any particular organization.

“It supports the simple of the Black Lives Matter movement to stop racism and injustice for all,” Hoang Hguyen said, who runs a Farmers Insurance office. “I believe every life matters. But, if we do not stand up for the lives of those most marginalized, how can we say that all lives matter?”

However, not all agreed with Hoang Hguyen. He said those who oppose the billboard called for a boycott of his business while others went as far as to call for his lynching.

“Not in a million years, did I think that I would receive death threats,” Hoang Hguyen said in a Facebook post nearly 10 days after the billboard was placed. “There has been a public call for my lynching within my own Vietnamese community. A community that I love, and a community that I have proudly served.”

Some critics suggested that he should focus on the injustices faced by Vietnamese-Americans.

“I grew up being called names,” Hoang Hguyen said. “I was in jobs where I was limited by the color of my skin. That is why I support stopping racism and injustice – period.”

Others pushed that America is the land of the free and all a person has to do is work hard.

However, Hoang Hguyen said this not necessarily true. He said he moved to America when he was 9 years old without his parents.

“However, I did not grow up with people who ran when they saw me,” he said. “I did not have to fear for my life anytime I saw the police. I was never told I am worthless by those with different skin colors. I know that my life would have been a lot hard to build if I did. Who am I to judge the enduring challenges that others face?”

Hoang Hguyen said the next billboard will honor first responders.

Here is a Facebook video of Hoang Hguyen explaining the purpose of the Black Lives Matter billboard:

This is my official statement regarding the Black Lives Matter billboard that I had paid for to support the movement to end racism & injustice:

I am Lê Hoàng Nguyên. I am a proud American of Vietnamese descent. Having experienced racism first hand over the years and especially having seen the recent social injustices in America, I used my personal funds to put up a billboard that shares the message of the Black Lives Matter movement. I did not receive any outside funds. The opinion expressed is 100% my own.

It is not a political message. It does not support any particular organization. It supports the simple idea of the Black Lives Matter movement to stop racism and injustice for all.

It does not mean other lives do not matter. I believe every life matters. But, if we do not stand up for the lives of those most marginalized, how can we say that all lives matter?

I have heard many of the complaints about the message:
Some mentioned rioting and looting, which I do not condone. The peaceful protestors far outnumber the troublemakers.

Some pointed to crime committed by African Americans against Vietnamese Americans. I empathize with the victims but not all African Americans are criminals.

Others reminded that Vietnamese Americans are also victims of discrimination. I understand and agree. I grew up being called names. I was in jobs where I was limited by the color of my skin. That is why I support stopping racism and injustice – period!

Finally, some of you argued that this is the land of opportunity and all you have to do is to work hard. It is true, America is a great country and I am forever grateful to this land. I came here at 9 years old without my parents and worked hard to build an amazing life. And, I am very fortunate to have a beautiful family. However, I did not grow up with people who ran when they saw me. I did not have to fear for my life anytime I saw the police. I was never told I am worthless by those with different skin colors. I know that my life would have been a lot harder to build if I did. Who am I to judge the enduring challenges that others face?

When I put up the billboard, I had three goals:
1. To show my public support for stopping all racism and injustice
2. To inspire future generations of leaders
To speak up & to start the hard conversations about racism and injustice
3. Having proudly accomplished these goals, I’ve decided to put up a new billboard that honors our First Responders. The new billboard will be installed in the near future.

In closing, I would like to share one of my favorite quotes: “Empathy is seeing with the eyes of another, listening with the ears of another, and feeling with the heart of another.” – Alfred Adler

While you might not agree with this statement from Alfred, it does not mean we can’t respect one another.

Respectfully,
Lê Hoàng Nguyên
